asked for a pdf file of these. They are said after the 9x Kyrie and Our Father at each Divine Office, and lead into Psalm 50 and then the Collect. I took the Preces, mainly, from the 10th Century Durham Rituale, which was owned by the last Bishop of Lindisfarne and the first Bishop of Durham [both Durham and Lindisfarne were subject to the Church of York as Metropolitan See]. Forgive any typos or mistakes in the text. These are not included in Volume 1 of the Medieval Monastic Psalter, but are located in a separate book; though, in future revisions they will be included
Preces for Vespers, Nocturns, and Lauds
Preces
After the Our Father and before the Collect. A Cantor sings these Preces. These are chanted
kneeling. The Preces are only sung on days in which kneeling is allowed.. The texts in italics the
Deacon [or Priest] announces in a monotone, and then the Cantor takes up the verse, with all
responding:
V. Our Help is in the Name of the Lord.
R. Who hath made Heaven and the Earth.
V. I said, O Lord, have mercy upon me.
R. Heal my soul, for I have sinned against Thee.

The Collect
After Psalm 50 with the “Glory be” is finished, the Priest alone stands up, and goes to the step of
the Altar, and chants the following:
V. Rise up, O Lord, and help us!
R. And redeem us on account of Thy Name.
V. Let Thy Mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
R. According as we have hoped in Thee.
V. From the Gates of Hades.
R. Deliver their souls, O Lord.
V. O Lord, hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.
Priest: The Lord be with you.
All Respond: And with thy spirit.
The Priest with his hands held joined in supplication chants:
Priest: Let us pray. The Priest alone then chants the Collect of the day, ending with ….
through all the ages of ages.

SALMO 50
Abbi misericordia di me, o Dio, secondo la tua grande misericordia e secondo la moltitudine delle tue indulgenze cancella il mio delitto. Lavami del tutto dalla mia iniquità e purificami dal mio peccato. Perché io conosco la mia iniquità e il mio peccato davanti a me è sempre. Contro te solo ho peccato e il male davanti a te ho fatto, così che tu sia riconosciuto giusto nelle tue parole e vinca quando sei giudicato. Ecco che nelle iniquità sono stato concepito e nei peccati mi ha concepito mia madre. Ecco, la verità hai amato, le cose occulte e i segreti della tua sapienza mi hai manifestato. Mi aspergerai con issopo e sarò purificato, mi laverai e sarò fatto più bianco della neve. Mi farai udire esultanza e gioia, esulteranno le ossa umiliate. Distogli il tuo volto dai miei peccati e cancella tutte le mie iniquità. Un cuore puro crea in me, o Dio, e uno spirito retto rinnova nelle mie viscere. Non rigettarmi dal tuo volto, e il tuo spirito santo non rimuovere da me. Rendimi l'esultanza della tua salvezza e confermami con lo spirito sovrano. Insegnerò agli iniqui le tue vie e gli empi a te ritorneranno. Liberami dal sangue versato, o Dio, Dio della mia salvezza, e la mia lingua celebrerà con esultanza la tua giustizia. Signore, apri le mie labbra e la mia bocca annuncerà la tua lode. Certo, se tu avessi voluto un sacrificio lo avrei dato: di olocausti non ti compiacerai. Sacrificio a Dio è uno spirito contrito: un cuore contrito e umiliato Dio non lo disprezzerà. Benefica, Signore, nel tuo compiacimento Sion e siano riedificate le mura di Gerusalemme. Allora ti compiacerai del sacrificio di giustizia, dell'oblazione e di olocausti; allora offriranno vitelli sul tuo altare

After Psalm 50 with the “Glory be” is finished, the Priest alone stands up, and goes to the step of
the Altar, and chants the following:
V. Alzati, o Signore, e aiutaci!
